Fire Training Gets Real

West Jackson Fire Department training

Being ready for an emergency is a critical part of the job at West Jackson Fire Department. Firefighters completed 4,206 hours of training in the first half of 2024 in a variety of categories, including fire attack, search and rescue, structural entry, firefighter survival, hazardous materials, and more.

Thanks to cooperation with the Jackson County Board of Education and local community members, crews recently practiced some of these skills in real-world settings. “Acquired structures give firefighters an environment to perform realistic training evolutions and hone necessary skills needed on the fireground,” said WJFD Capt. Jordan Edge, who serves as the department’s training officer.

The video below is an inside look at this type of training in a donated house. Crews ran drills focusing on search, victim removal, vertical ventilation, and firefighter mayday. Three WJFD crews, along with personnel from Jackson Trail Fire Department and Jackson County Emergency Services, completed a final drill in which crews were faced with multiple victims trapped and a firefighter mayday.

If you would like to donate a structure for training purposes, contact Capt. Edge.
