Public education provides an effective avenue for proactively reducing hazards and loss of life and property while simultaneously strengthening the ties between the Department and the people we serve. For further information about any of our community training programs, contact the Fire Marshal.
The West Jackson Fire Department offers multiple courses in CPR, AED, First Aid, and more to the general public.
Some of our free community education activities are,
Station Tours– You can schedule a station tour for your family, school groups, church groups, girl/boy scouts and more. Station tours usually include viewing the main areas of the station, the trucks and visiting with the firefighters. Kids of all ages will be allowed to sit inside the truck and talk with the firefighters who can educate and answer questions regarding fire safety, fire trucks, and the daily life as a firefighter. You can even get to see what a firefighter looks like wearing their turn out gear!
Tours may be scheduled between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm any day of the week.
Fire Engine Visits– Firefighters will visit local schools and daycare facilities to give children tips about fire safety, show off the fire engine, demonstrate fire gear, and teach them not to fear firefighters in emergency situations.
Fire Safety Trailer- This fire risk reduction classroom on wheels will help children learn what to expect and how to react if the room or building fills with smoke. The fire safety trailer is equipped with a system that fills it with “safe smoke.” Participants learn how to safely crawl through the trailer to safety.
First Aid/CPR classes– available to businesses and residents of the fire district. Classes are subject to the instructor’s availability.
There is a Four student minimum, fifteen students maximum, for CPR/AED or First Aid classes.
Upon successful completion of the course participants are awarded a certification card.

Heartsaver CPR/AED (Cost is $25 per person) This course is designed for anyone that needs to learn CPR; corporate and retail employees, security, law enforcement, and most anyone that needs a course completion card for job or regulatory requirements. It is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult, child, and infant CPR/AED use. It also covers how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants. This is a moderately strenuous course and participants should be in good physical health able to perform all aspects of CPR. This course takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete.
Heartsaver First Aid (Cost is $25 per person) This course is for individuals with limited or no medical training that need a course completion card in first aid to meet job, regulatory or other requirements. This course is geared toward adult victims and is not intended for child care providers. This course covers first aid basics, medical emergencies, injury emergencies, and environmental emergencies. This course takes approximately 3 hours to complete
Heartsaver CPR/AED & First Aid (Cost is $40 per person)
BLS for Healthcare Providers (Cost is $50 per person) This course is designed to enhance the healthcare professionals’ understanding of the importance of early CPR and defibrillation. The course covers adult and pediatric CPR, special resuscitation situations, AED use, relieving choking, two-rescuer scenarios and the use of a bag-valve mask. It is intended for a wide range of medical professionals including physicians, nurses, nursing students, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, firefighters, and others. This is a moderately strenuous course and participants should be in good physical health able to perform all aspects of CPR. This course takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete.
Child Care Professional Fire Safety(Cost is $30 per person) The Child Care Professional Fire Safety Course developed by the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office is designed to provide a child care professional working with preschool children in “group day care” and “day care centers” basic information about fire safety so they may provide the occupants of their facility with at least a minimum level of protection from fire, and the potential risks associated with fire. Upon completion of this course, the participants will be issued a Day Care Professional Certificate from the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office that is valid for three (3) years. The Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office mandates that all employees of “group day care home” and “day care centers” have this training within 90 days of employment and have a renewal course every three (3) years.
